WELCOME TO FOREST MEDICINE RETREATS!
We came up with a new plan for 2024, it is our 5 year anniversary and that is exciting as part of our journey to nurture the diversity of the Forest medicines, protecting what is there and tending to the Forest to add to the complex diversity and ecology of what medicines show themselves from year to year. From yarrow, plaintain, nettle, valerian, coneflower, horsetail, poplar, willow, prairie sage, wormwood, seneca, canada thistle, strawberry, raspberry, lady slipper, sarsaparilla, iris, highbush cranberry, saskatoon, gentian, and coltsfoot, most of which grow wild and were already on the land. We have worked hard to continue to work and nurture the land and supplement existing wild medicines by seeding and planting indigenous plants that fit the land’s boreal forest ecosystem.
We are super excited to continue this project to work with Chad Cornell and Hollow Reed School of the Healing Arts and host two retreats a year on our land during the summer months. We created two categories of registration: the Nurturer registration category so you can contribute towards this project and stay in one of our fun accommodation creations, and the Fellow Traveler category to contribute to this journey and bring your own tent. You can go to the Retreat Shop to register! Your attendance helps towards our vision and investment in this healing journey and having the land there for our collective education in our herbal medicines.

WELCOME TO FOREST MEDICINE RETREATS
We are located in the ancestral homelands of the First Nations of Treaty 1 signed in August 1871. The lands located by Camp Morton and Gimli, Manitoba are located on the ancestral lands of the Peguis First Nation (see also Selkirk Treaty signed in 1817).
Join us and further your investment in your herbal medicine journey and healing study at our Forest Medicine Retreats.
The Forest Medicine Retreats is our own personal journey to preserve the Forest and its herbal medicines - and why we decided to host students of Hollow Reed School of the Healing Arts to learn and study - and its a community journey to wonder, awe, observe and study the Forest. So it is always here to help us be grounded in the medicines and our community. Twice a year in summer, we believe the retreats provide the educational and inspirational foundation for a better future grounded in herbal medicines.
Immersed in nature in the boreal forest at the Little Retreat in the Forest (littleretreatintheforest.com) in Manitoba’s Interlake just north of Gimli, Manitoba where we study while we take in the healing and calming energies of the spruce and poplar trees for a full learning weekend.
We are thrilled that we will study with Master Herbalist Chad Cornell of Hollow Reed School of the Healing Arts. Let me pass on what I know about Chad - I have known Chad for decades, he has wonderful teaching abilities and tremendous knowledge of the healing energies of our human bodies.
The classroom is (literally) the Forest - and the Dome, a 30 foot outdoor nature dome (mostly) away from the elements and the Forest’s creatures and insects. You’ll learn about nature's medicines, how plant medicine helps us and how we can use those medicines for our own personal healing journeys. Add some yoga, meditation instruction, plant identification walks, and some time to visit the local Arnes farmers market or go into beautiful Gimli and support local businesses there you go!
Like you, we have years of learning about herbal medicines and use them for our healing in one form or another, knowing that herbal medicines can help our human bodies in restoring themselves. We have designed different levels of retreat options depending upon where you are at in your learning journey. I have been learning from Chad for many years before I embarked on our own herbal medicine journeys and our path to preserving and nurturing the medicine diversity in the Forest. We are also experienced hosts, hosting guests who stay year round in the cabin at this special place in the Forest.
At the retreats you will study a breadth of curriculum taught by a skilled master herbalist and teacher and cover the subject of the healing properties of the plants of our world, and the non-linear ways we can learn about plants that the Western World seems to be missing. See below and in our Retreat Shop for the Retreats we offer. Both are open to all levels of study in herbalism, from beginner to advanced.
Please this is an alcohol and drug free gathering. Breathing in the Forest phytochemicals and spirit is all we need. Oh maybe a sense of wonder and awe!!
TEACHING FUNDAMENTALS:
The retreats each include a balance of teachings including the following:
fundamentals of herbalism and its practices going back thousands of years and across cultures
basics of wild food harvesting and uses
deepen your understanding of creating your own personal medicine chest for these unique times we live in
learn the process of making remedies, creating formulas, and assessing which plants to use
explore legendary and essential local plants, mushrooms, and tree medicines
develop a deep and genuine relationship with each of your plant allies, your "familiars"
explore non-linear ways of knowing and learning such as dream yoga, lucid dreaming, shamanic journeying, creative visualization, meditation, and herbs specifically used for empowering one's ability to dream well, in the setting of the forest and the trees.
Non-instructional optional activities we have added to supplement and synthesize the Hollow Reed teachings include sensory plant walks, forest bathing (shinrin yoku), soundscapes, getting your toes in the soil, communal fires, sharing time, meditation guidance, morning yoga and a little bit of adventure and fun!
Each retreat has limited registration - up to a maximum of 20 people.
We are on site and participating in the gatherings and available to provide anything you need or answer your questions.
Please STAY IN TOUCH WITH US!
As we get closer, we will send you our E-BOOK with details of the Retreat like recommendations on what to bring (like your camp chair and other things!) with more information and about the Land we call “the Forest”, and also the WAIVER that has to be signed (basic outdoor nature education waiver for legal reasons!)

“Hello! Hello! I just wanted to send a quick message to say how thankful I am for such a lovely stay and retreat. You really did take care of us as a group and of myself and my cousin-in-law. I had such a restful time at your property. Thank you for providing and sharing such a lovely venue. Thank you for winding us down from our everyday so that we could be present and reconnect to nature. Thank you for making sure that we had fresh ground coffee to start our days. Thank you for the glorious yoga practice in the mornings as sunshine came through the trees. Thank you for the guided meditations to create calmness. Thank you for the informative lessons on herbal medicines as I now have a new interest in learning more about our local forest medicines. Thank you for creating community in such a short period of time and reminding us all how valuable it is. It was a pleasure meeting you all. I hope to return next year!

“Master Herbalist Chad Cornell offers a dynamic approach with experiential learning opportunities on many of the ancient herbal wisdoms. Also, the Little Retreat In The Forest is a special space of artistic whimsy and natural beauty providing the perfect opportunity to take pause, deeply breathe the fresh woodland air, and stir the soul. “If you are looking for the peace, quiet, calm, and comfort that only a warm bed or camping in the forest can provide, you don't need to pick - this place has it all! Every detail is thought of from the couch in the outdoor kitchen, to the art inside and out, and the many pillows to choose from to get the best sleep. I drifted off to the sounds of frogs, crickets, and the breeze in the trees. I really appreciated the stool in the humamanure washroom for the shorter folks ;) There is an amazing meditation (or rest/relax) spot outside in the trees with a chair in a small clearing. I lost myself there for almost an hour; it was so peaceful and grounding. There are trails on the property to explore, as well as a pond/memorial bench facing west to take in the sunset. Weather has you staying inside? They provide books, magazines, board games, and even a record player! The hosts are amazing ❤️ The Prospector is a perfect option if you are looking for a balance of camping and glamping.”
- Melissa, Not So Little Prospector
“Micheal and Collette are truly super(ior!) hosts! They went out of their way to ensure nothing was missed before and during the stay! The outdoor forest bath and shower and the lovely sauna were incredible added touches. Their love of the place and sharing it with you transfers on every level. Truly heart felt in each touch! My stay was nourishing and restorative and without any pretence. It was just as described with added magical touches that make this place a treasure and truly one of a kind. Look no further if you seek a retreat to nature and all it has to offer, with some special extra creature comforts like the sauna! The magical winding trails and paths and ponds to swim and explore will leave you in awe and aching to return to their boreal paradise and warm, welcoming hearts as hosts! Blessings and and light to you both Micheal and Collette! I hope to see you again soon! Namaste! 🙏

“I loved reconnecting with nature out at Little Retreat in the Forest. It was so rejuvenating and refreshing. Exactly what I needed. The sailboat was a fun adventure and cute and cozy. Definitely for one person. I didn't sleep the best the first night I was there, but after spending the next day on the land, busy and out in the fresh air and sunshine, I had a great sleep night two! I will be back.”
